genuine question, what does "tapering" actually mean for a weekly injectable, there’s no pill to cut in half
With oral meds, tapering usually means smaller pills or fewer per day, a fairly intuitive mechanical process. With a weekly injection, what does the community actually mean by "taper"? Reducing the mg amount over time, stretching the interval, some combination, or is there no real consensus and it's whatever your prescriber comes up with?
best — the order this archive was captured in
no formal consensus that I'm aware of, and that's kind of the honest answer. mine was mg reduction over time with the interval kept fixed. I've seen others describe interval stretching instead (same dose, longer gaps) or both combined. There's no standardized taper protocol published for these drugs the way there is for, say, some psychiatric medications.
that's actually useful context, was assuming I was missing some established protocol that everyone else knew about
you're not missing anything, there genuinely isn't one published, which is part of why this whole community topic is so full of individual anecdote rather than settled practice
pharmacologically, mg reduction and interval stretching both reduce average drug exposure over time, but they do it with different concentration-time shapes. Neither is "more correct" without outcome data comparing them, which doesn't exist.
Good clarifying question, and the honest "no consensus" answers in this thread are more useful than a false one would be. Whatever taper approach someone uses should be worked out with whoever manages their prescription, not assembled from this thread.
appreciate everyone being upfront that this is genuinely unsettled rather than pretending there's a hidden standard protocol
fwiw this question genuinely comes up constantly and the "no formal protocol exists" answer should probably be pinned somewhere
came here confused about the exact same thing, glad it's not just me missing an obvious answer
the wiki doesn't cover this at all currently, adding it to my list of gaps to draft something for
appreciate everyone here being upfront about the absence of a standard rather than inventing one to sound authoritative
fwiw the interval-stretching vs mg-reduction distinction is the part I'm bookmarking
hoping someone eventually runs a proper comparison, feels overdue given how popular the topic is
saving this whole thread, going to reread before my own eventual taper conversation
