[Meta] should this community rename "maintenance phase" to something that doesn’t sound like an afterthought

Meta

Half-serious, half-not. "Maintenance phase" as a name kind of implies it's the boring bit after the real thing happened. Reading enough threads here has convinced me it's actually its own skill set — the lowest-effective-dose hunting, the identity adjustment, the boring-data-logging — and I wonder if the framing undersells it to newcomers.

Genuinely good question and one worth raising with the mod team properly rather than deciding informally in a comment. My gut reaction as someone who didn't originally name this community: you might be right that it undersells the phase, though renaming an established community has its own costs (confusion, broken links, lost history).

totally fair on the cost side, wasn't expecting an actual rename, more just flagging the framing question

as someone who's spent way too much time in this exact community: "phase" does undersell it. losing weight on these drugs is mostly following a schedule. maintaining is an actual ongoing skill with real decisions in it, dose-floor-hunting, identity stuff, the works.

agree with the sentiment even if the community name itself probably shouldn't change, maybe just more explicit language in the sidebar about what this place actually covers rather than the name itself

that's a much easier lever to pull than a rename and I'll bring exactly that suggestion to the mod team, thank you

three years on this site and "maintenance" only started meaning anything to me personally in the last twelve months, before that it was an abstract future word. the framing problem is real for newcomers specifically.

mild pushback, "maintenance" is a completely standard word in this exact context in the broader weight-management literature, not sure the community needs to reinvent terminology that already exists elsewhere

fair, I was talking about internal framing/sidebar copy more than the literal community name, should've been clearer about that distinction

that clears it up, agree sidebar copy is a much lower-cost fix than a rename

fwiw this whole meta-thread is a nice demonstration of exactly the "maintenance is its own skill" point being made

would read a proper sidebar rewrite if the mod team drafts one, happy to give feedback

tangential but a "Floor Hunting" flair might genuinely be worth adding given how often that specific topic comes up here

read the whole thread before commenting, good discussion all around

About c/maintenancephase

The part nobody posts about: what happens at goal weight. Finding a lowest effective dose, dose-interval stretching, regain risk data, muscle retention, the psychology of not having a number to chase, and staying on indefinitely versus tapering.
